- Queens Public Library said a ransomware attack caused a systemwide network outage affecting its website, app, on-site computers, checkout and return machines, renewals, digital media and free Wi-Fi at all 66 locations, NY1 and The Register reported.
- All branches remain open on schedule; some virtual and in-person programs may be affected, the library said. Patrons should check with their branch by phone.
- As of Thursday morning, services were still down, QPL president and CEO Dennis Walcott said in a statement cited by NY1.
- Walcott said QPL is working with the NYPD, federal partners, City Hall and cybersecurity experts. The NYPD said it is working with the library and the FBI on the investigation, per NY1.
- Customers will not be charged late fines during the outage. The Register said no ransomware group had claimed the attack as of Thursday.
A ransomware attack has knocked digital services offline across the Queens Public Library system, even as every branch building stays open.
What is down
The library first reported a systemwide network outage on Wednesday. By Wednesday evening it said the disruption was the result of a ransomware attack, according to The Register, which cited QPL's social posts and patron notices.
NY1 and The Register say the outage affects the website, the QPL mobile app, on-site computers, checkout and return machines, renewals, digital media services and free Wi-Fi at all 66 locations.
What still works
All library locations remain open as scheduled, NY1 and The Register reported. Some virtual and in-person programs may be impacted; QPL advised visitors to confirm with their local branch by phone and to follow the library's social channels for updates.
Borrowers will not be charged late fines on materials due during the outage, both outlets said.
Investigation
As of Thursday morning, the affected services were still unavailable, QPL president and CEO Dennis Walcott said in a statement quoted by NY1. He said the library is working with the NYPD, federal partners, City Hall and cybersecurity experts.
The NYPD told NY1 it is "aware of a cybersecurity incident impacting Queens Public Library computer systems" and is working with the library and the FBI on investigative and recovery work.
The Register reported Thursday that no established ransomware group had claimed responsibility. QPL warned that restoring the network will take some time.
