The group behind Midtown's Cuerno is opening a more relaxed sibling a few blocks from Union Square. Norte, a northern Mexican steakhouse from restaurateur Alberto Martínez, opens Thursday, Oct. 29, at 39 W. 19th St. in the Flatiron District, according to the restaurant's announcement and the Observer.

The idea is the asador de barrio, the neighborhood grill culture of northern Mexico, where people gather around carne asada cooked over live fire. Martínez opened Cuerno at Rockefeller Center in 2025; The Infatuation described Norte as "a little more relaxed."

What's on the menu

Executive chef Oriol Mendívil and chef of culinary innovation Jaime Cavazos built the menu around a Josper charcoal oven. It moves from botanas and tacos to vegetables, carne asada and house specials meant for sharing:

  • USDA Prime steaks, including a rib eye with bone marrow and garlic-chili sauce, the Observer reported.
  • Trompo-carved tacos on handmade corn and flour tortillas, plus a raw bar with tostadas, ceviches and aguachiles.
  • A tableside chicharrón cart.
  • A French dip de barbacoa, beef cheek and tongue slow-cooked for 12 hours in the charcoal oven and served on sourdough with Chihuahua cheese. Only 12 are made each day.
  • Pollo asado rojo: a half chicken in red chile adobo, roasted over the fire.

To drink, there's a list of more than 40 Mexican wines from eight states, the Observer said, plus margaritas.

The room

Norte fills a restored 1910 landmark building, with interiors by Mexican firm A de Arquitectos: distressed brick, aged wood, metal ceilings and antique furniture. There are 150 seats, including a 16-seat central bar, a Bar de Mar chef's counter and a private dining room.
