In 1984, former President Jimmy Carter dedicated his time to revitalizing a dilapidated six-story building at 742 East 6th Street in Manhattan's East Village. This wasn't just any building; it marked the very first Habitat for Humanity project in New York City.

A Humble Beginning:

Contrary to expectations, Carter didn't just make a symbolic appearance. He actively participated in the restoration, working alongside volunteers for ten days. This commitment, even amidst Secret Service protection in a high-crime area, highlighted his dedication to the cause.

More Than Just Hammers:

Rob DeRocker, the project's executive director, recalls Carter's unwavering commitment. He was the first to arrive and the last to leave each day, far exceeding initial expectations. This hands-on approach not only helped restore the building but also significantly elevated Habitat for Humanity's profile.

A Lasting Impact:

The project garnered national attention and established Habitat for Humanity's presence in NYC. For resident Don Kao, discovering that his apartment was personally worked on by President Carter was a surprising revelation, further underscoring the project's lasting legacy.

Years later, Carter's return for a reception showcased his enduring commitment to the initiative. Even in his later years, his dedication to building homes for those in need remained unwavering.
