The corner that was Franklin 820 has a new bar. Wilkie opened Wednesday, Oct. 21, at 4 p.m. at 820 Franklin Avenue, near Union Street, Eater NY reported, about a block south of the Franklin Avenue subway stop.
It comes from co-owners Ian Phillips, who has worked at the Manhattan bars Ten Degrees and Botanica, and Kim Shaw, both Crown Heights residents, according to the neighborhood newsletter Grand Army Gazette, which first reported the plans in August. Franklin 820 closed last December.
What's on the menu
- Drinks: no-fuss cocktails, frozen drinks, cold beer, wine and non-alcoholic options. Phillips told the Gazette the goal is "very good drinks for very affordable prices without being fussy."
- Food: what Phillips calls "very good drinking food," including a chicken schnitzel sandwich, Spam musubi and a "danger dog," a bacon-wrapped hot dog with sauteed peppers in the style sold outside Dodger Stadium.
- The room: the owners were aiming for "light, bright and airy," with lots of plants and trees, some grown by Phillips, the Gazette reported. Eater noted a rubber stamp that inks the bar's blue logo onto napkins.
What's coming
Karaoke is planned once the bar's full license is in order, according to a comment on the bar's Instagram cited by Eater. The owners told the Gazette they hope to revive some of what neighbors loved about Franklin 820, including its drag karaoke nights, and are considering seed and plant swaps and a series in which longtime residents share stories about the neighborhood's history.
