A man was shot and killed on a subway platform at the Seventh Avenue-53rd Street station in Midtown on Saturday afternoon, police said.
The shooting happened on the northbound E train platform, ABC7 reported. Officers responded to a 911 call at about 12:21 p.m., according to Fox 5 NY, which cited the NYPD. The victim was shot in the chest and taken to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead just after 1 p.m., police told Gothamist. Police had not released his name or age.
The NYPD said the shooting stemmed from a dispute on the platform, but it was not clear whether the victim knew the shooter, Gothamist reported. ABC7, citing sources, said the two men had been arguing before the gunfire.
No arrest yet
No arrests had been announced Saturday afternoon. The NYPD told Gothamist it is looking for a specific "person of interest," and Fox 5 NY reported that police are searching for a man who ran from the scene. The MTA referred questions to the NYPD.
Service changes
While police investigated, uptown E trains were rerouted along the F line between West 4th Street-Washington Square and Jackson Heights-Roosevelt Avenue, and uptown D trains bypassed the station, according to MTA alerts cited by Gothamist. ABC7 said uptown C trains were also skipping Seventh Avenue. Riders should check the MTA app or mta.info before heading out, since the reroutes could change as the investigation wraps up.
Gothamist noted that gun violence in the transit system is up this year: as of Oct. 11, four people had been shot in the transit system in 2026, compared with two over the same period last year, Gothamist reported, citing NYPD statistics.
