It was a soggy Sunday for New York football. The Jets ended a three-game losing streak with a 17-12 win over the Cleveland Browns at MetLife Stadium, while the Giants came back from two touchdowns down in Maryland only to settle for a 27-27 overtime tie with the Washington Commanders.
Jets 17, Browns 12
Geno Smith hit Garrett Wilson for a 32-yard touchdown on the Jets' opening drive, but the offense stalled after that, and two Andre Szmyt field goals had Cleveland within 7-6 by the second quarter, according to ABC7 New York and amNewYork. Jason Sanders made a 54-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter to put the Jets up 10-6.
Deshaun Watson then found rookie Denzel Boston for a touchdown that gave the Browns their first lead, but Szmyt missed the extra point, leaving it 12-10 with 6:15 left. The Browns got the ball right back when Carson Schwesinger strip-sacked Smith, ABC7 reported.
The break came on special teams. After the Jets' defense forced a three-and-out, a high snap went through punter Corey Bojorquez's hands and Trevin Wallace recovered for New York, ABC7 reported. Three plays later, Braelon Allen ran 22 yards for the go-ahead touchdown with 3:01 left. Allen finished with 116 yards on 24 carries, ABC7 reported, with Breece Hall out because of a quad injury, according to amNewYork.
The defense sealed it. Will McDonald strip-sacked Watson on fourth down in the final two minutes, the Jets' eighth sack of the game. Rookie David Bailey had three of them, ABC7 reported, and amNewYork said he became the first Jets rookie in 30 years with five tackles and two sacks in a game, which he did by halftime.
Injuries: Jets tight end Kenyon Sadiq was ruled out in the fourth quarter with a concussion, and Browns receiver KC Concepcion left early in the game after a hit to the helmet and did not return, according to ABC7.
Giants 27, Commanders 27 (OT)
The Giants were held to 77 yards in the first half and trailed 27-13 in the fourth quarter after Jayden Daniels' second rushing touchdown, a 26-yard run, amNewYork reported. Daniels, playing his first game since dislocating his left elbow in Week 2, ran for 103 yards and threw for 199, according to ABC7.
Jameis Winston then led two long scoring drives. Isaiah Likely caught a 17-yard touchdown on fourth-and-8 with 7:20 left, his second of the day, a score that stood after replay review even though the ball was punched out just after he crossed the goal line. Malik Nabers tied it with a 17-yard touchdown catch with 1:43 to go, ABC7 and amNewYork reported. Winston finished 33 of 54 for 326 yards and three touchdowns. Nabers and Likely each had 11 catches, for 121 and 94 yards.
Overtime unraveled for both teams. Rookie Dominic Zvada hooked a 46-yard field goal attempt left, his third miss of the wet afternoon; he made two of five tries, according to the two outlets. Later, with the Giants at the Washington 24 and about two minutes left, Daron Payne stripped Cam Skattebo and the Commanders recovered. Daniels drove Washington to the Giants 24, but with 12 seconds left and no timeouts he kept the ball, scrambled for no gain and the clock ran out, ABC7 reported.
The Giants are 3-1-1 and still lead the NFC East. Washington is 1-3-1.
