- It is the only scheduled general-election debate between the two, three weeks before the Nov. 3 election, under the state's public campaign finance debate rules.
- A Marist University poll last week had Hochul leading 53% to 42%, with 5% undecided; Emerson College recently showed a similar double-digit edge, NY1 reported.
- Hochul is tying Blakeman to President Donald Trump; Blakeman is hitting taxes, utility bills and immigration and appeared with Trump in Syracuse on Friday.
- Early voting begins Oct. 24 statewide.
New Yorkers get their only head-to-head look at the governor's race tonight: Gov. Kathy Hochul and Republican challenger Bruce Blakeman meet for an hourlong debate at 7 p.m. on NY1 and Spectrum News channels statewide, Gothamist and NY1 reported.
Political anchors Errol Louis and Susan Arbetter will moderate from NY1's Chelsea studios. The broadcast also streams on Spectrum's app and YouTube pages. Spectrum News scheduled the forum months ago as the third of three statewide debates; the comptroller and attorney general matchups already aired.
Why tonight matters
The debate falls three weeks before the Nov. 3 election and is the only scheduled general-election meeting between the Democratic incumbent and the Nassau County executive. Candidates who take public matching funds must debate under state Public Campaign Finance Board rules, NY1 noted when Spectrum announced the slate.
Polls still favor Hochul. Gothamist cited a Marist University survey last week putting her ahead 53% to 42%, with just 5% undecided and few supporters saying they might switch. NY1 separately cited Emerson College numbers showing a similar double-digit lead. Marist pollster Lee Miringoff told Gothamist the value of a debate now is less persuasion than motivating each side's base.
The contrast both camps want
Hochul has blanketed airwaves with ads linking Blakeman to President Donald Trump, whose New York job approval sat at 39% in that Marist poll, Gothamist reported. Blakeman appeared with Trump at a Syracuse rally Friday and cast the governor as aligned with progressive stars including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
On the trail, Blakeman has centered tax cuts and lower utility rates; Hochul has touted childcare subsidies and energy rebates while criticizing tariffs, Gothamist reported. NY1 quoted Hochul defending a record of returning billions in tax relief and Blakeman blaming her for high costs and limits on local ICE cooperation.
Fundraising remains lopsided: NY1 said Blakeman reported less than $180,000 on hand while Hochul held more than $19 million in the latest filing. Early voting opens Oct. 24 across the state.
