- Hochul and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez appeared together in the Hudson Valley this week on data centers.
- City & State placed the Tuesday event at Fishkill Farms, with Rep. Pat Ryan also there.
- Hochul signed a one-year moratorium in July on permits for new hyperscale centers.
- Gothamist reported that East Fishkill temporarily blocked a proposed 1,000-megawatt project in June.
- Republican challenger Bruce Blakeman spent the week nearby, talking about immigration enforcement instead.
New York's fight over hyperscale data centers moved to a Hudson Valley farm this week, with Gov. Kathy Hochul and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez standing together on a pause the governor already signed.
Gothamist reported that Hochul and Republican challenger Bruce Blakeman campaigned about 30 miles apart. Hochul was in East Fishkill with Ocasio-Cortez, talking about a one-year moratorium on hyperscale data centers. Blakeman, the Nassau County executive, was outside a government building in Chappaqua, criticizing a state law that limits how local police cooperate with federal immigration authorities.
City & State put the Democratic event on Tuesday at Fishkill Farms in southern Dutchess County, and said Rep. Pat Ryan was there too. The magazine reported that Hochul signed the moratorium in July, pausing state environmental permits for new centers. Ocasio-Cortez, quoted by City & State, thanked the governor for what she called leadership on the issue.
Why this town
Gothamist reported that East Fishkill, in June, temporarily blocked a proposal for a 1,000-megawatt data center. That local fight is the backdrop for the statewide pause. City & State described the Tuesday gathering as organized by the officials' government offices rather than as a formal campaign rally, even though the governor's race is the obvious context.
The two accounts do not match on every detail of tone. Gothamist frames the week as a contrast in closing arguments: data centers for Democrats, immigration for Blakeman. City & State spends more time on the odd-couple photo of a moderate governor and a democratic socialist in farm clothes. Neither story says the moratorium has been extended, or that the East Fishkill project is dead for good. The pause, as both describe it, is one year.
