A 46-year-old Rockland County man was shot and killed on the George Washington Bridge on Tuesday night in what investigators believe may have been a road-rage attack, and the person who fired the shot is still being sought, ABC7 reported Wednesday morning.
What investigators say happened
Port Authority police received reports of a single-vehicle crash on the bridge's westbound upper level around 7:06 p.m., according to the Port Authority. Officers found the driver with what appeared to be a gunshot wound to the head.
Investigators told ABC7 the man was driving a Volkswagen Golf on a ramp leading to the westbound upper level when his car nearly collided with another vehicle, sparking a dispute. As both cars continued toward New Jersey, an occupant of the other vehicle allegedly fired, striking him. His car kept going west before coming to rest against the median near the middle of the bridge.
He was taken to Englewood Hospital in New Jersey, where he was pronounced dead. Authorities identified him as a Con Edison worker who was not on duty at the time, ABC7 said. The other vehicle fled, and police are reviewing surveillance video as they search for the shooter. No other injuries were reported, ABC7 and Gothamist reported. As of Wednesday morning, no arrest had been announced.
Hours of delays
The investigation closed the westbound upper level for hours. The Port Authority reported delays of up to 90 minutes on the upper level heading into New York as of 9:15 p.m., and NJ Transit said buses to and from the George Washington Bridge Bus Terminal were running up to 30 minutes late, Gothamist reported. The bridge's North Walk was also closed to pedestrians and cyclists, with the recently reopened South Walk available instead. One eastbound lane on the upper roadway was briefly closed. All lanes reopened shortly before 1 a.m., according to ABC7.
Anyone with information can contact the Port Authority Police Department, which patrols the bridge.
