Key points
  • Diner 24 opened its second location on Wednesday, Oct. 6, at 1674 Broadway, at West 52nd Street, Eater NY reported. It is open around the clock.
  • The two-story space seats 235 people inside plus 16 outside, and has an upstairs stage with a 20-foot runway between the booths, the New York Post reported.
  • Servers are performers who take the stage every hour for show tunes, according to founder Stratis Morfogen. Some have Broadway and off-Broadway credits, he told the Post.
  • The menu follows the original Diner 24 on Third Avenue in Gramercy: Crazy Shakes, foot-long hot dogs, triple-decker burgers, Pat LaFrieda brisket burgers, breakfast dishes and disco fries.
  • The 1921 building also houses the clubhouse of The Lambs, the theatrical club founded in 1874, and once had the jazz club Birdland in its lower levels.

The Theater District has a new late-night option with a soundtrack. Diner 24, the Gramercy diner known for its oversized milkshakes, opened a second, much bigger location on Wednesday, Oct. 6, at the corner of Broadway and West 52nd Street, Eater NY reported. Like the original, it is open 24 hours a day.

Dinner and a show

The new flagship spreads across two floors, with 235 seats inside and 16 outside, according to the New York Post. Upstairs, a stage with a 20-foot runway divides the booths so performers can sing above the diners, under stage lighting.

The servers double as the cast. "Our servers are Broadway performers, and every hour they'll take the stage and perform show tunes for guests," founder and CEO Stratis Morfogen said in a July announcement from the building's owner, the EMMES Group of Companies. He told the Post that five of the roughly 16 singing waiters hired at that point had Broadway or off-Broadway experience. Eater described the hourly performances as coming from actors with Broadway backgrounds.

What's on the menu

The menu follows the first Diner 24, which opened in Gramercy. That means the towering Crazy Shakes, foot-long hot dogs, triple-decker burgers and comfort-food breakfasts that made the original a social media favorite, plus Pat LaFrieda brisket burgers, homemade pastas and disco fries, according to the EMMES announcement. Morfogen calls the concept "Diner 2.0."

A building with a show-business past

The diner sits on the ground floor of 1674 Broadway, a nine-story building completed in 1921 that EMMES recently restored. The Lambs, America's oldest professional theatrical club, moved its clubhouse to the third floor earlier this year, and the building's lower levels were once home to Birdland, the jazz club where Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald and John Coltrane played, according to EMMES.
