If you are driving in Manhattan on Sunday morning, plan around a few thousand cyclists. The National Multiple Sclerosis Society's annual Bike MS ride takes over the FDR Drive, the Harlem River Drive and the West Side Highway for much of the morning, and the MTA has detours in place at three of its crossings.

When and where

The ride starts and ends at Pier 76, on the West Side Highway between West 35th and 36th streets, CBS New York reported. The start chute opens at 6 a.m., opening ceremonies are at 7:15 a.m. and riders roll out at 7:30 a.m. Access to the start line closes at 8 a.m.

Riders choose a 30-mile or a 50-mile route. The 30-mile loop goes around the southern tip of Manhattan, north along the East Side to a rest stop at Inwood Hill, then back down the West Side to Pier 76. The 50-mile route continues from Inwood across the George Washington Bridge and up the Hudson to Alpine, N.J., before returning over the bridge. Organizers expect riders to leave the Inwood rest stop around 9:15 a.m. and start reaching the finish line around 9:45 a.m. A finish-line festival runs at Pier 76 from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Street closures

According to the city Department of Transportation, as reported by CBS New York, these roads may be closed at the NYPD's discretion:

  • West Street southbound from West 54th Street to the Battery Park Underpass, and the underpass's south tube to the FDR Drive.
  • FDR Drive northbound from the Battery Park Underpass to the Harlem River Drive, and the Harlem River Drive northbound to 10th Avenue.
  • In Inwood: 10th Avenue from the Harlem River Drive to West 218th Street, plus West 218th Street, Indian Road, West 214th Street and Seaman Avenue.
  • Riverside Drive from Seaman Avenue to the Henry Hudson Parkway, and from West 165th Street down to West 72nd Street.
  • Henry Hudson Parkway / West Street southbound from Riverside Drive to West 54th Street.
  • Near the start: 12th Avenue between West 34th and West 43rd streets, West 40th and West 43rd streets between 11th and 12th avenues, West 59th Street between 11th and 12th avenues, West End Avenue from West 59th to West 72nd Street, and West 72nd Street from West End Avenue to Riverside Drive.

Bridge and tunnel detours, 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.

No bridge or tunnel will fully close, but approach roads and several ramps are affected, the MTA said:

  • RFK Bridge: with the northbound FDR Drive and Harlem River Drive closed, Manhattan-bound traffic is sent onto the southbound FDR Drive or 125th Street.
  • Henry Hudson Bridge: no access to the southbound, Manhattan-bound bridge from the Mosholu Parkway.
  • Hugh L. Carey Tunnel: all traffic leaving the tunnel in Manhattan is detoured north onto West Street or through the Trinity Place exit, which stays open.

The MTA advised drivers to use other routes if they can and to check its Bridges and Tunnels site for updates. Subway riders are not affected by the ride itself; check the MTA app for weekend service changes before you go.

The weather is cooperating: the National Weather Service forecasts a sunny Sunday with a high near 58 and a light north wind.
