Two women killed after car plows through Allerton intersection in the Bronx, police say

Police say an 81-year-old driver couldn't stop on Allerton Avenue near Holland Avenue Friday afternoon. He hit pedestrians and four other vehicles. No arrests have been made.

Two women were killed and a third person was critically injured Friday afternoon when a car went through an intersection in the Allerton section of the Bronx and hit pedestrians and several other vehicles, police said.

The crash happened at about 2:15 p.m. near Allerton and Holland avenues. According to the NYPD, an 81-year-old man driving a white Mercedes-Benz west on Allerton Avenue could not stop as he approached traffic. He rear-ended two vehicles and then hit two more, police said.

Officers found three pedestrians unconscious and unresponsive with injuries to the head and body, Gothamist reported, citing the NYPD. They were taken to Jacobi Hospital. Two of them, both women, died, ABC7 and PIX11 reported. The third is in critical condition. The victims have not been publicly identified.

At least eight other people were hurt, according to PIX11. Everyone in the other vehicles stayed at the scene and was taken to the hospital in stable condition, police said. The driver was conscious and alert with minor injuries, ABC7 reported.

Surveillance video shows the car moving slowly at first and then speeding through the intersection and hitting a person in a crosswalk, ABC7 reported. The impact blew out the front windows of nearby businesses. "Everybody was screaming," a man who said he has worked on the avenue for 35 years told the station.

No arrests have been made, and the investigation is continuing, police said.
