Man charged with attempted murder in South Ozone Park stabbings after NYPD officer shot woman holding knife

An NYPD officer shot a woman inside a home in South Ozone Park, Queens, on Friday night after police said she moved toward officers with a knife during a chaotic call in which three men were stabbed.

Update, Oct. 25: Man charged with attempted murder

Police arrested a man on Saturday in connection with the stabbings. The NYPD identified him as Rashaun Donovan, 48, of Queens, CBS New York reported; ABC7 spelled the name Rashawn Donavan and said he lived at the home. He is charged with two counts of attempted murder, four counts of assault and one count of criminal possession of a weapon, according to CBS.

The NYPD said it has no reason to believe the woman who was shot was responsible for the reported break-in or the first stabbing, CBS reported. A man who lives on the third floor, Edward Grant, told CBS the woman is his girlfriend and that she was a victim. He said a man who had been visiting the house all day stabbed another resident, broke down their door armed with two knives, and that the couple were trying to pin him down when officers arrived. "It wasn't a home invasion," Grant told the station.

Grant said his girlfriend was shot twice in the stomach and disputed that she was moving toward officers, saying she likely did not realize she still had a knife in her hand and that the encounter lasted about 10 seconds. Police said the encounter was recorded on body-worn cameras and that the investigation is ongoing. She has not been publicly identified.

Friday night: what police said happened

Officers were sent to a house on 149th Street near 133rd Avenue at about 9:38 p.m., CBS New York reported, citing the NYPD, after multiple 911 calls about a break-in and a stabbing, ABC7 reported.

According to the NYPD's account to ABC7, officers knocked and got no answer. A man then shouted from a second-floor window that he had been stabbed by his uncle, and a woman opened a third-floor window and tossed her keys down to police. Officers went up to the third floor, where they found a woman and two men struggling.

The three separated when officers ordered them to put their hands up, police said. NYPD Chief of Patrol Philip Rivera said the woman pointed at one of the men but did not raise her right hand, did not comply with repeated commands and moved toward the officers with a knife. When she was within several feet, one officer fired, striking her, Rivera said. She fell, another officer used a Taser, and police recovered the knife.

Injuries

The woman was taken to a hospital in stable condition. Three men were hospitalized with stab wounds, and officers recovered two knives, ABC7 reported. The FDNY said four people in all were taken to a hospital, according to CBS New York.
