Zum Stammtisch's Pork Store Closing: A Loss for NYC's Culinary Heritage?

# Zum Stammtisch's Pork Store to Close
**Zum Stammtisch**, a beloved German restaurant in Glendale, Queens, is closing its attached pork store on March 1st. While the restaurant itself will remain open, the closure marks the end of an era for a unique part of NYC's culinary landscape.
The pork store, operating since 2010, was known for its high-quality meats, prepared foods like potato dumplings and German potato salad, and hard-to-find imported German pantry staples. During the pandemic, they even expanded to online sales via Mercato.
## The Decline of NYC Pork Stores
This closure highlights a broader trend: the dwindling number of traditional pork stores in NYC. These stores, often rooted in immigrant communities, are facing challenges, including rising costs and changing consumer preferences. Other recent closures include Morscher’s Pork Store in Ridgewood and G. Esposito & Sons in Carroll Gardens. Even the city's oldest pork store, Staubitz Market, is struggling to stay afloat. While some closures are due to retirement or landlord disputes, the overall decline points to a significant shift in the city's food scene.
While new butcher shops are emerging, they often lack the specialized focus and immigrant heritage that defined the traditional pork stores.
## Zum Stammtisch's Future
The restaurant itself will continue operating, serving its popular German dishes, including jagerschnitzel and pretzels. It remains to be seen how the space previously occupied by the pork store will be used.
While Zum Stammtisch's restaurant will live on, the closure of its pork store represents a loss of a significant piece of NYC's culinary history and a testament to the changing dynamics of the city's food industry.

A United Airlines flight from Houston to New York City's LaGuardia Airport experienced a frightening incident on Sunday. UA Flight 1382, carrying 104 passengers and five crew members, had an engine issue that caused flames to erupt during takeoff from George Bush Intercontinental Airport. Thankfully, the plane was still on the runway when the issue occurred.
**Passengers Describe the Experience:**
Passengers described the sudden stop as terrifying. Roslyn Tenpow, a passenger, expressed her immediate fear for her family. Alejandro Mendoza highlighted the abrupt halt as the most alarming part of the ordeal. Many passengers were praying during the incident.
**Safe Evacuation and Resumption of Travel:**
The plane was safely evacuated, with passengers using emergency slides before eventually switching to stairs. All passengers and crew were unharmed. They were put on another flight and arrived at LaGuardia Airport on Sunday night. One passenger noted that boarding a second plane was particularly challenging after this experience.
**Houston Fire Department Response:**

* **LaGuardia Airport:** 1.2 inches
* **Newark, NJ and Central Park:** 0.5 inches
* **JFK Airport and Islip, NY:** Trace amounts

# NYC's Shockingly Small Apartment: $2,000 Rent for a Sink-Toilet Combo?
New York City's high cost of living is no secret, but one woman's apartment has taken the internet by storm. Emily Bonani is paying a whopping **$2,000 (approximately Rs 1,74,262)** a month for a tiny apartment in the Lower East Side, featuring a bathroom so small it has a combined sink-toilet unit!

Imagine this: a 2.5-by-3-foot bathroom with a sink that only runs when the toilet flushes. Ms. Bonani's TikTok video showcasing this unique (and some might say, horrifying) setup has gone viral, sparking widespread debate.

The video shows a sink attached directly to the toilet tank, meaning you can't use the sink without flushing the toilet. This unusual design, intended to maximize space, has raised eyebrows and concerns about hygiene and comfort.

Social media users have reacted with a mixture of shock, disgust, and amusement. Some questioned the practicality and hygiene of such a setup while others expressed sympathy for the struggles of finding affordable housing in NYC.

**What do you think?** Is this extreme space-saving measure justified by the hefty rent? Share your thoughts in the comments below!

## Staten Island Chuck: A Groundhog Legend
Residing at the Staten Island Zoo, Chuck has been predicting the weather since 1981. He's even got his own theme song by the Rock-A-Billy-Band! In a memorable incident, Chuck's granddaughter, Charlotte, was accidentally dropped by then-Mayor Bill de Blasio during a Groundhog Day ceremony in 2014.
## Groundhog Day History
Groundhog Day's origins trace back to Candlemas, a Christian festival celebrated on February 2nd. The tradition of using animals to predict the weather evolved from European customs and was adapted by German immigrants in Pennsylvania, leading to the famous groundhog tradition.

# Trump's Controversial New Rule: NYC Transit Funding in Jeopardy
A new order from Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, a former reality-TV star, links federal transportation funding to marriage and birth rates. This means that to secure funding for crucial projects like the **Second Avenue Subway** and the **Gateway Project**, New York City may need to prioritize communities with higher marriage and birth rates than the national average.
## Unexpected Conditions for Funding
The order also includes these controversial stipulations:
* The **MTA must cooperate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)**.
* No **mask or vaccine mandates** can be enforced on federally funded transit projects.

This decision has sparked controversy and uncertainty. MTA chairman Janno Lieber stated that the MTA will follow the law and cooperate with ICE when investigating criminal activity. However, the practicality and legality of prioritizing communities based on marriage and birth rates remain unclear.
## Major NYC Projects at Risk
Numerous vital transportation projects rely heavily on federal funding:
* **Second Avenue Subway:** Phase 2 relies on $3.4 billion in federal funds.
* **Gateway Project:** This project, including the new Hudson River tunnel, depends on $6.9 billion in federal funding.
* **Interborough Express:** This $5.5 billion project is expected to rely on approximately $3 billion in federal funds.
* **BQE repairs:** The city is seeking federal grants for the repair and redesign of this crucial roadway.

Senator Chuck Schumer expressed confidence in securing continued funding for New York's transit network despite the new rule.

# NYC Snow Forecast: Is a Winter Surprise on the Way?
Despite Staten Island Chuck's prediction of an early spring, the possibility of snow in NYC remains. The National Weather Service forecasts a rain/snow mix Sunday night, with light snow potentially starting around 7 p.m. before transitioning to rain.
## How Much Snow?
Don't expect a blizzard! NYC and Long Island are predicted to receive less than an inch of snow, mainly a rain/snow mix. However, areas further inland, particularly in Connecticut, could see 2-4 inches.

## The Remainder of Winter
While NYC is currently behind on its normal snowfall for February (around 14 inches), meteorologists predict another 7-12 inches for the NYC area, Long Island, and parts of South Jersey before winter's end. Areas north of the city, including parts of North Jersey, the Hudson Valley, and Connecticut could see even more.

# Trump and Hochul Face Off: The Future of NYC Congestion Pricing
**Gov. Kathy Hochul** recently engaged in a private conversation with **President Donald Trump** regarding the controversial **congestion pricing** plan in New York City. While details remain undisclosed, Hochul confirmed that Trump and his associates have expressed disapproval. Despite this opposition, Hochul remains committed to the plan, emphasizing the positive impact it has already had on commute times, street congestion, and mass transit ridership.

The implementation of congestion pricing, costing half a billion dollars, is crucial for the **MTA** to raise the necessary $15 billion for transit system maintenance and upgrades. Concerns linger about potential federal funding repercussions if the state doesn't cooperate with certain federal policies.
Hochul and Trump are scheduled for a follow-up discussion next week. While **MTA Chairman Janno Lieber** expresses optimism about the plan's legal standing, the outcome remains uncertain. The future of congestion pricing in NYC hangs in the balance.

**Simon's Campaign and Platform:**
Simon's campaign focused on promoting animal rescue and adoption in NYC. He won a thrilling election against Bertram the Pomeranian (who sadly passed away before assuming his role as deputy mayor). Pepper, a mini chocolate dachshund, was subsequently sworn in as Simon's chief deputy.
**Who is Simon?**
Simon, a 7-year-old rescue dog, arrived in NYC in 2021 via Hearts & Bones Rescue in Texas. He lives on the Upper West Side with his adopter, Sophie Vershbow, who aims to use Simon's platform to advocate for animal welfare.

**The Election Process:**
The election, spearheaded by Stephen Calabria, involved a significant online voting process. There were challenges with bot accounts, but ultimately Simon was declared the winner.
**A Nationwide Trend:**
Simon isn't alone! Several other US towns and cities have dog mayors, including Cormorant, Minnesota (Khaleesi Sherbrooke) and Idyllwild, California (Max).
**Simon's Future:**
Simon's mayoral duties will include attending city events and advocating for animal rescue and adoption. The dog mayor elections are planned to be held every three years.

# NY Doctor Indicted for Mailing Abortion Pills
A New York doctor, Dr. Margaret Carpenter, has been indicted in Louisiana for allegedly sending abortion pills to a teenager, potentially marking the first criminal charge against a provider for mailing abortion medication since the overturning of *Roe v. Wade*.
**The Case:**
The indictment charges Dr. Carpenter with criminal abortion, a felony in Louisiana, which has a near-total abortion ban. The teenager's mother was also indicted.
**New York's Response:**
New York Governor Kathy Hochul has vowed to **protect Dr. Carpenter** and will not comply with an extradition request. She called the case "outrageous" and an attempt to restrict reproductive care nationwide. New York's shield law protects doctors who provide abortion care to patients in states with abortion bans.
**Louisiana's Stance:**
Louisiana considers abortion medication **"controlled dangerous substances"**, making it a crime to access them without a prescription. The state's Attorney General stated they will "hold individuals accountable for breaking the law".
**National Implications:**
This case highlights the **legal battle** over abortion access following the *Roe v. Wade* reversal. The Abortion Coalition for Telemedicine, which Dr. Carpenter co-founded, condemned the indictment as a threat to women's reproductive healthcare. The medication in question is approved by US regulators and deemed safe and effective.
**The Bigger Picture:**
Abortion pills now account for nearly two-thirds of abortions in the US. This case underscores the ongoing conflict between states with differing abortion laws and the implications for healthcare providers.

**New York City's office market is experiencing a remarkable resurgence**, with demand reaching pre-pandemic levels. This surge is fueled by a combination of factors: a significant influx of new workers and a widespread return-to-office initiative by employers.
## Key Market Indicators
According to VTS, a leading commercial real estate data provider, office demand in NYC **skyrocketed 25%** year-over-year during the fourth quarter of 2024. This impressive figure, based on unique new tenant tours, signifies a robust upswing in new leasing activity. The data indicates that the finance and tech sectors are primarily driving this trend.
SL Green Realty Corp, a major player in Manhattan's office and retail market, reported strong results, further confirming the market's recovery. Their CEO, Marc Holliday, highlighted the city's **projected 38,000 new office-using jobs in 2025**, mostly in finance, business services, and IT. This significant job growth translates into substantial demand for office space. SL Green ended the year with 92.5% occupancy and projects exceeding 93% in the coming year.
**IBM's recent 92,663-square-foot lease expansion at One Madison Avenue underscores this positive momentum.** The tech giant’s increased footprint to over 362,000 square feet highlights the commitment to a physical office presence in NYC.
While New York City leads the office recovery, other markets are also showing signs of improvement, such as San Francisco, Seattle, and Chicago. However, the national picture reflects a slower, steadier progress as more companies embrace hybrid work models.
## The Outlook
The sustained growth in office demand, defying seasonal expectations, demonstrates a renewed business confidence and signals long-term planning despite economic uncertainty. The resurgence of NYC's office market is a strong indicator of the city's enduring economic strength and appeal.

< *(Replace with actual image if available)*
In 1992, Barbara Corcoran, founder of The Corcoran Group, was delivering packages—yes, you read that right! During one delivery to a luxurious Fifth Avenue penthouse, she fell in love with the 4,600-square-foot space. She envisioned herself living there one day.
**A Visionary's Persistence:**
Despite the challenging real estate market, Corcoran's dream persevered. She told the owner, "If you ever sell this, would you sell it to me?" The owner initially dismissed her, but years later, after Corcoran's rise to fame, the call came.
**The Big Purchase & Renovation:**
In 2018, Corcoran and her husband, Bill Higgins, purchased the 11-room duplex penthouse for **$10 million**, investing an additional **$3 million** in renovations. Key features include a stunning greenhouse, a curved staircase, and a terrace offering breathtaking city views.
**An Emotional Investment:**
Corcoran's approach to buying property is purely emotional. She buys based on how a space makes her feel, prioritizing "romanticism" over purely financial considerations. She emphasized, "**I walk in and I go, ‘I belong here.’**"
**Potential Return:**
In a 2020 interview, Corcoran revealed she could likely sell the penthouse for **$12 million**, but plans to remain for at least 10 years. She confidently stated, "**New York is a crazy market... I will make a lot of money.**"
This story is a testament to the power of vision, persistence, and the undeniable allure of the New York City real estate market.

## NYC Winter So Far
Here are some key stats for the winter so far:
* **December:** 2.8 inches of snow (average is 4.9 inches)
* **January:** 3.0 inches of snow (average is 7.3 inches)

## Punxsutawney Phil's Accuracy
How accurate is Punxsutawney Phil? Over the last 10 years, his accuracy rate is only 30%! According to the Stormfax Almanac, his overall accuracy since 1887 is 39%. For NYC in 2025, Phil would need to *not* see his shadow to match climatological predictions.

<
After a three-day absence due to illness and swirling rumors of resignation and potential deals with federal investigators, Mayor Eric Adams made a defiant return to the public eye. Addressing a crowd of religious leaders at the annual Interfaith Breakfast, he vehemently denied the resignation rumors, stating, **"Who started the stupid rumor that I was stepping down on Friday? Are you out of your mind?"**
The rumors intensified after former City Councilmember Sal Albanese posted about them on social media. Adams criticized the media for focusing on the rumor instead of the positive news of **record-high job numbers** in the city.
His absence coincided with a busy week, including ICE raids and reports that the Department of Justice was considering dropping his federal corruption and bribery case. The mayor acknowledged the stressful week, stating it was "a scary week for me. It was hard." However, he avoided directly addressing his upcoming trial or taking questions from reporters after the event.
## Signs of the Times

Adams's speech, punctuated by standing ovations, highlighted his reliance on faith during difficult times. However, some clergy members have criticized his handling of asylum seekers and expressed concerns about his support for undocumented New Yorkers under the Trump administration. The tension was evident when Rabbi Sharon Kleinbaum displayed a sign during Adams’ speech, imploring him to show mercy to immigrants. Adams responded to her action repeatedly during his speech, creating a noteworthy dialogue between the two.
Kleinbaum, who has worked with immigrants for decades, stated her disappointment in Adams' perceived capitulation to the President’s deportation plans, prompting her to create the sign as a way to instigate a conversation, despite some attendees urging her to sit down. She expressed gratitude that Adams at least acknowledged the sign but stood firm in criticizing Adams' policies towards immigrants.

**A bombshell report reveals that high-ranking Justice Department officials are reportedly discussing the possibility of dropping corruption charges against New York City Mayor Eric Adams.** This comes as a surprise, especially considering Adams was indicted on five counts of corruption in September, including bribery and campaign finance violations, potentially facing up to 45 years in prison.
While Adams has consistently maintained his innocence, the development raises significant questions. The Justice Department has yet to officially comment, and it remains uncertain whether the Manhattan prosecutors handling the case will indeed dismiss the charges.

## The Unconventional Timeline
The timing of these discussions is particularly intriguing. The discussions followed a meeting between Mayor Adams and Donald Trump in Florida, prior to Trump's inauguration, although Adams insists their conversation did not involve his legal case. Trump has previously indicated he would consider pardoning Adams, making this possibility even more complex.
Furthermore, Manhattan prosecutors recently revealed they have uncovered "additional criminal conduct" by the mayor, adding another layer of unexpected complexity to the situation. The situation is further complicated by the Mayor's recent health concerns and the scheduling of a closed-door meeting concerning his legal case.
## Political Fallout
The news of the potential dismissal broke on the same day as New York City's Democratic primary mayoral forum, which Mayor Adams did not attend. His absence and the potential dropping of charges have already fueled intense debate among his potential rivals, with strong statements condemning the Mayor's actions.
**The situation remains highly fluid, and further developments are expected in the coming weeks.**
