The **New York City Marathon** is making its first course adjustment in over a decade, trimming two turns from the grueling 26.2-mile route this fall. While eliminating sharp corners might seem like a minor detail, it significantly impacts both the physical challenge for runners tackling mile 20 and the daily lives of **Bronx residents**. 

When the marathon returns on **Sunday, November 1**, runners will navigate a slightly altered path through **Mott Haven** between miles 20 and 21. This marks the first change since 2011, designed to reduce disruption in a neighborhood that has evolved significantly over the years.

### A Smoother Path for Runners and Residents
Previously, the route involved crossing the **Willis Avenue Bridge** into the Bronx and following a complex seven-turn loop around a block featuring a **Western Beef supermarket** and a 24-hour laundromat on East 140th Street. These road closures often hindered access for local businesses and the nearly 1,800-unit **Patterson Houses** across Morris Avenue.

This year, the new route simplifies the journey:
*   Runners will turn from **East 135th Street onto Alexander Avenue**, continuing north past East 138th Street.
*   At **East 141st Street**, they will turn left onto Third Avenue, then right onto East 138th Street.
*   The course will then proceed directly across the **Madison Avenue Bridge** back into Manhattan.

By reducing the number of turns from seven to five, the new path leaves the supermarket and laundromat outside the immediate race zone. This allows customers to access these essential services without navigating through crowds of roughly **60,000 marathoners**.

### Honoring a Milestone Year
The update coincides with a major milestone: **2026 marks the 50th anniversary** of the marathon’s five-borough course. Since expanding beyond Central Park in 1976, the modern route has remained iconic, starting on Staten Island, crossing five bridges, and finishing in Central Park. 

For runners, fewer sharp turns mean less strain during one of the race's toughest stretches. For the community, it means easier access to food and laundry—a thoughtful adjustment by **New York Road Runners** to better align with the needs of the neighborhoods they pass through.
