While the nation remembers the tragedy, the event is defined by **President Donald Trump's absence** from the Ground Zero commemoration and the intense controversy surrounding the attendance of New York's first Muslim mayor, **Zohran Mamdani**.

### A Divided Commemoration

President Trump will instead pay his respects at the **Pentagon**, where one of the hijacked planes struck. Meanwhile, Vice President **JD Vance** and four former presidents—**George W. Bush**, **Joe Biden**, **Barack Obama**, and **Bill Clinton**—are expected to join victims' families at the World Trade Center site in lower Manhattan.

The ceremony itself will be quiet and reflective, with no speeches delivered. Instead, bereaved family members will read the names of the **2,977 victims**, accompanied by the ringing of a bell to mark key moments during the attack.

### The Mayor Under Fire

Despite the somber occasion, Mayor **Zohran Mamdani** faces fierce opposition from right-wing figures, including the *New York Post* and former Mayor **Rudy Giuliani**. A petition demanding Mamdani boycott the event has gathered over **100,000 signatures**, accusing him of being dismissive of American institutions. 

"It's concerning to me that the mayor is being treated differently simply because he is Muslim," said City Council member **Shahana Hanif** in response to the backlash. Mamdani, however, has been praised for his transparency regarding the long-term health impacts of the attacks, recently revealing documents about the **toxic air** that sickened thousands of first responders and residents.

### Remembering the Victims

The human toll of 9/11 continues to resonate. Beyond the immediate deaths, more than **9,400 people** have since died from 9/11-related illnesses caused by the dust cloud. As Logan Miller, whose uncle and grandfather were lost to the attacks, noted, younger generations often struggle to comprehend the scale of the tragedy, leading to renewed questions and remembrance.

Security remains tight, with the Secret Service erecting a steel perimeter and police deploying an anti-drone team. Ahead of the service, a poignant drone show featuring **2,977 lights** rose above New York Harbor, honoring each life lost.
