This decision, driven by CEO Sandra Velasquez, highlights San Antonio's growing appeal as a business hub, fueled by its strong cultural identity and community.
Why San Antonio?
Velasquez, who launched Nopalera in 2020 while living in NYC, found that basing the brand in New York didn't align with its core values. San Antonio, a top-performing market for Nopalera alongside Los Angeles and Chicago, offered a natural fit. The city's rich Mexican-American culture resonated deeply with Velasquez, mirroring her upbringing in San Diego.
Nopalera products are already available in various San Antonio retailers including Rancho Diaz, Feliz Modern, and Curio at Hotel Emma. Interestingly, Velasquez's attraction to San Antonio also includes its smaller, more manageable airport with convenient flights to Mexico, despite the ongoing major airport overhaul.
Future Plans and Vision
Nopalera's future is bright. The company anticipates doubling its revenue this year and expanding its retail presence. In August, Nopalera products will be available in Ulta Mexico and online with Ulta USA.
Beyond Beauty: A Mission of Equity
Velasquez's vision for Nopalera transcends simple beauty products. It's about representation and equity for Latina women and their heritage within the luxury beauty market. Her background includes a socially and politically conscious music career where she sang about immigration and women's rights. This commitment to equality fuels her work with Nopalera, aiming to place Latina heritage on equal footing with established luxury brands.
The San Antonio Advantage
The move underscores a broader trend: San Antonio's emergence as a business-friendly city, attracting companies that value its cultural richness and vibrant community.
