Bronx Imam Finds Abandoned Newborn
A shocking incident unfolded in the Bronx where a newborn baby girl was found abandoned in a bag on a doorstep. Security camera footage shows a woman leaving the infant, wrapped in blankets, in a green tote bag. Police identified and charged the woman, 26-year-old Delfina Galvez, with reckless endangerment and child abandonment.
Neighbors' Heroic Actions
The baby's cries alerted neighbors, who contacted Imam Mamadou Hafiz Jallow. He discovered the infant, cold and alone, and immediately called 911. Jallow, who had been at his nearby mosque, described the baby's condition and his actions, highlighting his compassion and quick thinking. The baby is now safe and in good condition at Jacobi Medical Center.
Safe Haven Laws in New York
New York has safe haven laws, allowing parents to leave newborns at designated locations (hospitals, police stations, firehouses) without facing charges. However, the woman in this case is facing charges due to the circumstances in which the baby was left.
Community Reaction and Aftermath
The incident has sparked outrage and concern in the community. Neighbors expressed disbelief and sadness about the abandonment. Imam Jallow, while unsure of the motivation, speculated that the woman may have chosen his doorstep because of his role as an imam. The story underscores the importance of safe haven laws and the need for support systems for new parents.
